Step-By-Step Instructions
I am going to teach you how to make a 3-tier diaper cake step-by-step. Make sure you read the materials list so you know what will be needed to create your masterpiece!
Lets get everything ready first!
- Take each diaper and roll them tightly to form a cylindrical structure. You can choose to roll them on either side to expose the plain white side, or the decorative pattern side. Use a rubber band to keep the diapers from unwinding.
- Get your base ready and decorate it by adding your own flair.
That was simple enough, now lets get started on the first tier (bottom piece):
- Place your chosen core (baby shampoo, baby powder, etc.) in the middle of the base.
- Begin to form the bottom tier by circling around the core using the rolled up diapers. Each diaper should be parallel from the other.
- The general rule of thumb to determine how many rings of diapers you should wrap around the core is by the number of tiers. In our case, we are building a 3 tier diaper cake, the bottom tier should have 3 rings, middle tier should have 2 rings, and the top tier should have 1. Easy enough.
- How do you hold each ring together? I usually user a larger rubber band to hold the inner rings together, and then a ribbon for the outer ring. If you are aiming for aesthetics, then I suggest you use a ribbon to loop around the center of each diaper once and tying it at the end. For the outer ring, you can do the same ribbon method, but in addition, use some sort of elastic to hold it tight.
- For extra eye-candy, wrap the outer ring if a larger decorative ribbon.
For the middle tier:
- Easy, repeat the steps of the bottom tier but with one less ring. The top of the core will most likely be fully covered once you finish this tier.
- Tie the outer ring with ribbon and knot it like a bow.
For the top tier:
- Again, repeat the steps of the bottom tier but with two less rings.
- For a stable top tier, user another smaller core like a baby bottle.
Well that was easy enough. Now it’s time to decorate the cake:
There really is no step-by-step instruction for this part of the cake, so I will give you some examples of what I used to decorate my previous diaper cakes.
- I usually sit a small stuffed animal at the top of the cake, making sure I follow the motif of the design.
- Sometimes I drape cellophane over the entire cake to give it a little more character
- Pacifiers, bibs, and baby socks are also a popular item that i use to decorate the outside of the cake.
I hope this guide helps you in making your own diaper cake. I will guarantee you that it IS worth the time and you could also get the family involved. Making diaper cakes have always been a rewarding experience for me and I hope it is for you as well.
I would also like to hear from you if you have ever made one before. If you have any pictures, please e-mail them to me!
